This course will help you master the basics of the framework, understand its architecture, and learn how to create high-performance web applications. You'll be able to develop robust RESTful APIs

Teaching objectives
At the end of the training, the participant will be able to:
Install and Configure a SLIM Project
Modify the directory structure of an existing Slim project by applying an organized architecture
Create and Test Various HTTP Routes in SLIM
Check the API response and the data source
Connect SLIM to a database and perform CRUD operations
Develop and test comprehensive RESTful APIs
Add and Configure Middleware in a SLIM Application

Intended audience
Web developers interested in learning about the Slim micro-framework for PHP.

Prerequisites
Proficiency in PHP 7–8 and object-oriented programming concepts

Practical details
A mix of theoretical presentations and coding workshops. Each concept is immediately applied to real-world scenarios.

Course schedule

1
Introduction to Slim

  • An Introduction to the SLIM Micro-Framework and Its Benefits.
  • Comparison with other PHP frameworks.
  • Typical use cases for SLIM.

2
Installation and Configuration

  • Prerequisites for installing SLIM.
  • Installation via Composer or Laragon.
  • Setting up the development environment.
Hands-on work
Create a SLIM project, configure the basic settings, and verify that the system is functioning properly.

3
Project Architecture and Organization

  • Why Should You Structure Your Slim Project?
  • Recommended directory structure (src/, routes/, public/, config/).
  • Separation of responsibilities: routes, controllers, services, models.
  • Comparison with Laravel's MVC architecture.
  • Dependency injection and the PSR-11 container.
Hands-on work
Breaking down a monolithic project into separate controllers, extracting business logic into service classes, and configuring the PHP-DI container.

4
Creating Routes and Handling HTTP Requests

  • Understanding Routes in SLIM.
  • Define routes for the GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE methods.
  • Managing HTTP request and response parameters.
Hands-on work
Implementation of simple routes, management of request parameters and controller responses.

5
Interaction with Static Data (JSON)

  • Load a JSON file from SLIM.
  • View the results with SLIM.
  • Check the solution's API response.
Hands-on work
Check the API response and the data source.

6
Database Interaction

  • Configuring the database connection.
  • Executing SQL Queries from SLIM
  • Using PDO and ORMs with SLIM.
Hands-on work
Establishing a connection to a database, creating tables, and inserting and reading data using SLIM.

7
RESTful API Development

  • Principles of RESTful APIs.
  • Creating RESTful APIs with Slim.
  • Management of response formats (JSON, XML).
Hands-on work
Creating APIs for CRUD operations, testing endpoints using Postman, and handling JSON responses.

8
Using Middleware

  • What is middleware?
  • Add middleware to a SLIM application.
  • Examples of common middleware (authentication, etc.).
Hands-on work
Integration of middleware to secure data access using JWT.
