Prerequisites
Good knowledge of how to use a Mac OS X workstation, or knowledge equivalent to that provided by the course "Mac OS X, getting started" (Ref. CAM).

Installation

  • Mac OS X system installation.
  • System update.
  • Install and remove software using packages or alternative tools such as MacPorts and Fink.

Installation of a Mac OS X client and updates.

  • Account features. User creation. Detailed settings. Deleting a user.
  • System account features.
  • Preference management.
  • Connection configuration.
Hands-on work
Create and configure a user account.

Disk management

  • Disk utility and volume management.
  • Adding disks, partitioning.
  • Create and maintain file systems.
  • Virtual memory management.
  • Logging.

Adding a disk and mounting the volume.

Mac OS X file system management

  • File system hierarchy.
  • System/library/user folder roles.
  • User environment. Backup.
Hands-on work
Total or partial backup of the user environment.

Backup and restoration

  • Backup files on removable volumes.
  • Create images for burning (DVD-RW).
  • Synchronization tools.
  • The Time Machine tool.
  • Clone boot disk (Carbon Copy Cloner).

Time Machine backup and creation of backup disks.

Network management

  • Ethernet and Airport network configuration.
  • Network utilities: traceroute, ping...
  • Heterogeneous setting and sharing (Mac, Windows).
  • Protocols and access. Settings.
  • Access to directories.
  • Printer sharing.
  • Access to network printers.
Hands-on work
Configure the network and share a folder.

  • Shell selection.
  • View volumes, files and log files.
  • Browse the tree structure.

The equipment provided was adequate: the MacBook was perfect, but unfortunately the network wasn’t up to scratch (the internet connection kept cutting out), probably due to the heat. The trainer was very knowledgeable. The programme requires a deeper understanding (answering questions only leads to further questions).
