The goal of this training is to enable developers to effectively integrate GitHub Copilot into their daily workflows in order to improve their productivity and the quality of their code. Participants will learn how to leverage AI-powered assistance to generate, complete, explain, and refactor code directly within their development environment.

Teaching objectives
At the end of the training, the participant will be able to:
Understanding GitHub Copilot's Role in the Software Development Process
Master the use of GitHub Copilot (in VS Code and other IDEs) for generating, autocompleting, and modifying code
Master prompt engineering techniques to optimize the quality of code generated by Copilot
Use the GitHub Copilot CLI for command-line tasks and project management
Apply best practices to maximize productivity and code quality with GitHub Copilot

Intended audience
Web developers, software engineers, and architects looking to integrate AI assistants into their coding process.

Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of programming (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or another object-oriented language) and familiarity with an integrated development environment (IDE) such as VSCode.

Practical details
Teaching methods
Hands-on exercises. Through exercises and hands-on projects, you will create real-world applications using only Claude Code.

Course schedule

1
Introduction to GitHub Copilot

  • An Introduction to Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • The Role and Architecture of GitHub Copilot.
  • Overview of features (code completion, chat, refactoring).
  • The GitHub Copilot chatbot.
  • Use Copilot directly from a file.
  • Define a function and its implementation.
  • Best practices for using code completion.
  • The various cloud services (OpenAI, Claude, etc.) and their pricing models.
  • Installing an LLM Locally (Introduction to LM Studio and Hugging Face). RAG Architecture.
Hands-on work
Setting up VSCode, installing GitHub Copilot, and trying out some basic code completion.

2
Prompt Engineering for Copilot

  • Structure of an Effective Prompt.
  • Defining the Role and Context (Role Prompting).
Hands-on work
Write prompts to generate a simple web application (e.g., generating a Sudoku grid or web pages based on a prompt). Use CoT to request the design and implementation of a microservice with technical constraints. Create a prompt specifying a web application.

3
GitHub Copilot CLI Integration

  • Introducing GitHub Copilot CLI.
  • The main commands for project and code management.
  • Using the CLI to generate complex commands and scripts.
Hands-on work
Using Copilot CLI to generate Git commands, shell scripts, and dependency installation commands.

4
GitHub Copilot in the Project Lifecycle

  • Prompts for documentation and unit tests.
  • Generate a set of unit tests.
  • Prompt for refactoring existing code or migrating technologies.
  • Using prompts to secure code (simple audits).
Hands-on work
Generate unit tests for the microservice developed earlier. Develop and deploy a simple web application using only the AI development assistant.

5
Best Practices and the Future of AI for Developers

  • Review of Best Practices in Development with Copilot.
  • Manage privacy and sensitive data.
  • Human Verification and Accountability: A Discussion on RAG Architecture.
  • Create a local "ChatGPT" that explores a confidential document database using a RAG architecture.
Hands-on work
