Installation, X server and packages

  • What's new in Red Hat Entreprise Linux 7 and 8.
  • Type of installation. Typical problems and solutions.
  • Patches and updates. Subscribe to Red Hat Network.
  • Compiling and installing source or binary packages. Use of Yum.
  • Setting up Xorg.
  • The different office managers.
Hands-on work
Install and configure Linux Red Hat.

  • User and group management.
  • Shadowutils: commands and user account configuration files, /etc/skel/* templates. Role of NSS, PAM.
  • Tree backup tools, block-by-block, synchronization.
  • Startup: boot, grub, kernel. Init/Upstart.
  • Startup scripts, customization. Service management.
  • Login. System shutdown.

Manage startup, users and groups.

Managing disks and other peripherals

  • Disk types and partitioning. USB storage media. RAID and LVM and other types.
  • Primary and secondary swap.
  • File systems. Formatting, tuning and maintenance.
  • Mounting: mount, automonitor and /etc/fstab file.
  • Device management. Modules. Special files, from mknod to Udev.
